Implementation

The technical and people skills described in the book are intended to be implemented in both industrial and educational contexts. Successful skill implementation as judged by both the quality of learning and/or improvement of the product design process is likely to require further learning support over and above that gained by reading the book and the texts recommended in the book. There are various strategies by which learning and support might be gained four of which are summarised here with the first two relating to an industrial setting and the other two higher education.

Scenario 1

A product design team is led by a person with expertise in the Failure Mode Avoidance skills discussed in the book and has experience of team leadership. The team apply Failure Mode Avoidance skills to the design of a product that their company offers.

Scenario 2

A product design team attend regular training sessions which are lead by an expert trainer/instructor. The book is pre-reading on a chapter by chapter basis with the trainer using the engineering design example covered in the book along with presentation slides based on the graphics in book.

Scenario 3

A series of 'formal' lectures are given which follow the skills discussed in the book using the engineering example considered in the book or  a different engineering design example developed by the person giving the lectures. The book is read progressively by students prior to, or as learning reinforcement after, lectures.

Scenario 4

Having read the book and/or attended a series of lectures on the topics contained in the book students apply the skills discussed in the book to the design of a straight forward product within a small group project.
